Rolled Canvas Prints

Rolled canvas is the simplest way to order a professional canvas reproduction when you do not need us to stretch it onto a frame.

The print is supplied rolled in protective packaging, making it considerably more compact to store, transport and dispatch than a fully stretched canvas. It is particularly useful for artists and photographers who already work with a framer, customers producing exhibition work, trade buyers and anyone who wants to arrange the final presentation themselves.

Ready-to-Hang Bespoke Canvas Prints

If you want a finished piece rather than a rolled print, choose our ready-to-hang bespoke canvas option.

Each canvas is produced to order and hand-stretched over a wooden stretcher frame made to suit the selected dimensions. The result is a clean, contemporary wall display without the need for a conventional picture frame.

Because these canvases are made individually rather than pulled from a shelf of fixed frames, the service is particularly useful for photographs and artwork that need a specific proportion or custom finished size.

Canvas Printing for Artists & Photographers

Canvas is an excellent medium for reproducing photography, digital art, illustration and scanned original artwork. Its textured surface gives images a different character from conventional photographic paper and works particularly well for wall art, exhibitions and limited-run reproductions.

Your Existing Edge & Wrap Choices

For ready-to-hang canvases, choose from the edge and wrap treatments available in the online calculator. The best option depends on the composition of your image.

Where an image contains important detail close to the edge, avoid selecting a wrap treatment that would pull faces, text or other key content around the side of the frame. The on-screen selection and artwork guidance should make the effect clear before ordering.

For rolled canvas prints, allow enough additional canvas around the image if you intend to stretch the print later. The required allowance depends on the depth and construction of the frame you plan to use.

Custom Sizes & Unusual Proportions

Artwork does not always fit a standard photographic size. Landscapes may be panoramic, illustrations may be square and commissioned artwork may have completely bespoke proportions.

Canvas printing is therefore particularly well suited to custom sizing. Choose from the sizes available in the calculator or use custom dimensions where enabled.

For very large or unusual finished canvases, contact us if you would like us to confirm the most practical production and delivery method before ordering.

Our canvas roll has a maximum width of 1270mm. For rolled canvas supplied without a stretching allowance, the practical printable width can therefore be up to approximately 1270mm, subject to normal production margins.

If a rolled canvas is supplied for later stretching, we allow 65mm of additional canvas on each edge. Across the roll width this gives a maximum intended visible image dimension of approximately 1140mm.

Ready-to-hang canvases are supplied with standard hanging hardware.

Printed In-House

Canvas graphics are printed in-house on our 360-380gsm canvas using our HP Latex large-format printer. This gives us strong colour, fine image detail and the flexibility to produce standard and custom-sized artwork.

HP Latex inks are water-based in formulation but cure during printing, so the finished image is not water-soluble. Their low chemical emissions are also useful for artwork intended for indoor environments.

The printing technology is only part of the finished result. Good source artwork, sensible sizing and careful stretching are equally important to a professional canvas.

Preparing Artwork for Canvas Printing

• Preferred format: high-quality print-ready PDF, or a high-resolution image file where accepted by the uploader.
• Prepare artwork at the correct proportions for the canvas size you are ordering.
• Use the highest-quality original image available, particularly for large canvases.
• Do not artificially enlarge a small web image and expect it to become detailed at large size.
• Keep faces, text, signatures and other important details away from areas that will wrap around a stretcher frame.
• For a rolled print intended for later stretching, SM Print can provide a 65mm additional canvas allowance on each side beyond the intended visible image size.
• CMYK is preferred for print-ready artwork where practical, but photographic files should not be converted repeatedly between colour spaces.
• Check cropping carefully before upload.
• Check spelling, signatures and any incorporated text before ordering.

Image Quality & Resolution

The larger the finished canvas, the more important the quality of the original image becomes. However, a large wall canvas is normally viewed from further away than a photograph held in the hand, so an arbitrary requirement for 300dpi at full finished size is not always necessary.

If you are unsure whether your photograph or artwork has enough resolution for the size you want, ask us. We would rather help you choose a sensible size than print an unnecessarily enlarged low-resolution image.
