Premium 510gsm PVC - Not a Lightweight Economy Material
We use premium 510gsm solid PVC banner material as our standard rather than offering a confusing range of lighter grades. It gives banners a robust feel, strong print surface and the durability needed for both indoor and outdoor display.
Standard PVC banners are printed single sided and can be supplied trimmed, hemmed, eyeleted, with loops or pole pockets, or with a combination of finishing methods to suit the installation.
Mesh Banners for More Exposed Locations
For fences, construction sites, sports grounds and other exposed locations, a mesh banner can be a better choice. The open structure allows some air to pass through the material, reducing the wind loading compared with a solid PVC face.
Mesh does not remove wind load completely, so correct installation is still important. For large or exposed installations, use adequate fixing points and check the supporting structure is suitable for the size and location of the banner.
Custom Sizes - From Small Celebration Banners to Large Displays
PVC banners do not need to fit a fixed list of standard sizes. Enter your own dimensions into our online calculator and receive an instant price.
A single-piece banner can be produced up to approximately 1.6m across the printable roll width, allowing for hems and finishing. Larger dimensions can be achieved by producing sections and bonding them together.
There is technically considerable flexibility in banner length, although in practical terms we normally recommend keeping an individual banner to around 12 metres or less. Very large banners need careful consideration of handling, installation, wind loading and the structure they will be fixed to.
If you are planning an unusually large banner, contact us and we can help you decide the most practical way to produce it.
One Banner Is Absolutely Fine
You do not need a large quantity. Single banners are one of the most common orders we produce.
That makes custom PVC banners ideal for one-off messages such as "Welcome to Our Event", birthday celebrations, anniversaries, school events, presentations, sponsorship displays, temporary promotions and community events.
Finishing Options to Suit the Installation
How a banner is finished should be determined by how it will be displayed. SM Print offers a flexible range of finishing options rather than assuming every banner needs the same treatment.
Hemmed Edges
A reinforced hem around the edge provides additional strength and is a sensible choice for many banners that will be tensioned or used outdoors.
Eyelets
Metal eyelets provide convenient fixing points. Spacing varies with banner dimensions but is typically around 500mm. If you require a particular eyelet spacing or position, add the requirement as a production note when ordering.
Loops
Loops can provide an alternative fixing method where the installation calls for them.
Pole Pockets
Pole pockets can be added where the banner needs to slide over a pole, rail or supporting tube. Tell us the intended pole or fitting arrangement so the pocket can be specified appropriately.
Trimmed Edges
For suitable indoor or short-term applications, banners can be supplied cleanly trimmed without hems or eyelets.
Combined Finishing
Finishing methods can be combined where required - for example, hems and eyelets or pole pockets with other finished edges.
How to Hang a PVC Banner Properly
A well-made banner can still fail prematurely if it is installed badly. Wind pressure creates substantial force across a large surface, so the aim is to distribute that load rather than concentrating it on a few fixing points.
- Use multiple fixing points around the banner rather than relying only on the four corners.
- Where eyelets are supplied around the perimeter, use them evenly so the load is shared.
- Do not pull the banner excessively tight; allow the fixing system to absorb movement.
- Check that fences, rails, posts and other supporting structures are strong enough for the banner and expected conditions.
- Inspect outdoor banners and fixings periodically, particularly after strong winds.
- For exposed sites, consider mesh material to reduce wind loading.
Why We Recommend Elastic Bungee Fixings
For many outdoor installations, we recommend elastic bungee cord rather than rigidly tying every eyelet to the supporting structure.
The elasticity allows a small amount of controlled movement when the wind loads the banner. This helps distribute tension and reduces sudden shock loading on individual eyelets, hems and fixing points.
SM Print can supply banner bungees with your order. Space them evenly around the banner rather than using only a few fixing points.
Indoor & Outdoor Banner Printing
PVC banners are remarkably versatile. They can be used outside for advertising and events, but they are equally useful indoors for sports halls, schools, exhibitions, warehouses, retail environments, stages and large temporary displays.
We print banners in-house using HP Latex technology. The inks are water-based in formulation but, once cured during printing, the finished image is not water-soluble. The print is robust enough for outdoor banner applications without lamination, so lamination is unnecessary for our standard PVC banner product.
HP Latex inks also have very low chemical emissions and carry UL GREENGUARD Gold certification. Together with odorless prints on suitable media, this makes the technology particularly useful for indoor graphics, including environments such as schools and nurseries. Some print media can have their own inherent odor.
Where Can PVC Banners Be Used?
Almost anywhere you need a large, temporary or semi-permanent message. Common applications include:
- Business advertising and promotions
- Retail sales and shop-front promotions
- Construction and development sites
- Schools, nurseries and colleges
- Sports clubs and grounds
- Festivals and outdoor events
- Exhibitions and trade events
- Community and charity events
- Sponsorship and supporter banners
- Building and fence advertising
- Directional and information banners
- Grand openings and launches
- Birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations
- Welcome banners and photo backdrops
PVC or Mesh - Which Should I Choose?
Choose solid 510gsm PVC when you want a strong, continuous print surface and maximum visual impact. It is the natural choice for most indoor banners and many outdoor applications.
Choose mesh when the banner will be installed in a more exposed outdoor position, particularly on fencing or large open areas where wind loading is a concern. The perforated construction lets some air pass through the banner.
If you are unsure, tell us where the banner will be installed, its approximate size and how it will be fixed. We will help you choose the sensible option.
Designing a Banner That Can Be Read
A banner is usually viewed from much further away than a leaflet or business card, so simple design often works best.
- Make the main message large and immediately understandable.
- Use clear typefaces with good contrast against the background.
- Avoid filling every available space with text.
- Prioritise the business name, event, offer or message that matters most.
- Keep important text and logos away from hems, eyelets and other finishing areas.
- Use photographs and logos with enough resolution for the final printed size.
- If the banner includes a QR code, make it large enough to scan from the expected viewing distance and test it before supplying artwork.
Artwork Guide for PVC Banners
Supply a print-ready PDF prepared at the correct proportions. Large-format artwork does not always need the same effective resolution as close-viewed small-format print because banners are generally viewed from further away.
- Preferred format: High-quality print-ready PDF.
- Set the artwork to the correct aspect ratio and final dimensions, or use a clearly defined reduced scale for very large files.
- CMYK colour is preferred.
- Embed or outline fonts.
- Keep critical text and logos comfortably inside the finished edge.
- Allow extra safe space around eyelets and hems; as a practical starting point keep important content at least 50mm from finished edges unless a specific template says otherwise.
- Do not position critical content where pole pockets, loops or other finishing will interfere with it.
- Use high-resolution images appropriate to the final viewing distance.
- Check spelling, dates, telephone numbers, URLs and QR codes in the final exported PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions
What material do you use for PVC banners?
Our standard solid banners are produced on premium 510gsm PVC. We also supply mesh banners for applications where reduced wind loading is desirable.
Can I order a custom-size banner?
Yes. Enter your required width and height into our online calculator for an instant price.
Can I order just one banner?
Yes. Single banners are extremely common, particularly for events, birthdays, promotions, school activities and one-off messages.
What is the largest banner you can print?
A single-piece banner is limited by a roll width of approximately 1.6m less the allowance required for hems and finishing. Larger banners can be produced in sections and bonded together. In practical terms we normally recommend individual banners of around 12m or less, although the best solution depends on the installation.
Are PVC banners waterproof?
PVC banner material and the cured HP Latex print are suitable for outdoor banner applications. The finished print is not water-soluble. Correct installation and appropriate material choice remain important outdoors.
Do PVC banners need lamination?
No. Lamination is unnecessary for our PVC banners.
Are the inks really water-based?
HP Latex inks are water-based in formulation, but that does not mean the finished image dissolves in water. The inks are cured during printing to form a durable printed image suitable for outdoor banner use.
Can banners be used indoors?
Yes. PVC banners are useful indoors as well as outdoors. HP Latex inks have very low chemical emissions and carry UL GREENGUARD Gold certification, making the print technology particularly useful for indoor environments including schools and nurseries.
Do your banners smell?
HP describes Latex prints as odorless. The selected banner media can have its own inherent material odor, so we avoid claiming that every finished product has absolutely no smell.
What finishing options are available?
Banners can be supplied with hemmed edges, eyelets, loops, pole pockets or trimmed edges, and combinations can be used where appropriate.
How far apart are the eyelets?
Spacing depends on banner size but is typically around 500mm. If you have a preferred spacing or position, specify it in the production notes.
Why use bungee cords?
Elastic bungee fixings allow controlled movement and help spread wind load between fixing points, reducing shock stress on individual eyelets and hems.
Should I fix a banner only at the four corners?
For most outdoor banners, particularly larger ones, no. Use multiple evenly distributed fixing points so wind load is shared rather than concentrated at four eyelets.
When should I choose mesh instead of solid PVC?
Mesh is particularly useful for exposed outdoor locations and fencing because its open construction allows some air to pass through, reducing wind loading compared with solid PVC.
Can you print double-sided PVC banners?
Our standard PVC banner product is single sided.
Can you add pole pockets?
Yes. Pole pockets are available. Tell us how the banner will be supported so the required arrangement can be specified.
Can I use my banner on a fence?
Yes, provided the fence and fixings are suitable. For exposed fencing or larger installations, mesh may be preferable and multiple evenly spaced fixing points should be used.
Can you print birthday and celebration banners?
Yes. One-off birthday, anniversary, welcome and celebration banners are popular orders.
Can you print very long banners?
Yes, within practical handling and installation limits. Around 12m is generally the largest length we would recommend without discussing the job first.
I am not sure how my banner should be finished. Can you help?
Yes. Tell us where it will be displayed and how you plan to attach it, and we can advise on an appropriate material and finishing method.
